Poland’s Prime Minister launches coup against constitutional court

images

Poland is facing a constitutional crisis after Prime Minister Donald Tusk’s government was accused of staging a coup against the country’s Constitutional Tribunal.

Police were deployed outside the court after its president, Bogdan Święczkowski, was suspended by another judge over allegations he had obstructed newly appointed judges.

President Karol Nawrocki cut short his flight to Senegal and returned to Warsaw, later helping Święczkowski enter the building. Tusk defended the move as part of efforts to restore judicial independence, while opposition figures condemned it as an illegal takeover.

Polish MEP Dominik Tarczynski said Tusk wanted to swap the zloty for the euro, move Poland’s gold to the European Central Bank and open the borders.
