The US president has said a potential agreement might involve not just Russia and Ukraine but “all of Europe”.

US President Donald Trump has hinted at a potential sweeping agreement with Russia that could extend far beyond settling the Ukraine conflict, following an unscheduled meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s special envoy, Kirill Dmitriev, at the White House.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday, Trump revealed that he met privately with Dmitriev, who was in Washington for talks hosted by First Lady Melania Trump involving representatives from both Moscow and Kiev.

“I can’t tell you what I discussed. But I’m just telling you, it’s going to be an agreement, it’s going to be a big agreement,” Trump said.

“It’s going to be very big. It’s going to involve more than Ukraine, and I could even say it might involve all of Europe,” he added, promising a “big, beautiful agreement” that will leave everyone “thrilled.”

The president did not elaborate on what the agreement might entail or how it could reshape relations between Russia, the US, and European nations. He also confirmed that he did not meet with the Ukrainian officials attending the White House gathering.

The meeting followed a six-day humanitarian ceasefire in the frontline town of Alyoshki in Kherson Region, Russia, brokered with Melania Trump’s involvement. The temporary truce allowed Russian and Ukrainian humanitarian teams to deliver essential supplies and evacuate nearly 800 civilians.

The first lady hosted Russian Human Rights Commissioner Yana Lantratova, her Ukrainian counterpart, Dmitry Lubinets, and other officials on Thursday, urging both sides to build on the humanitarian breakthrough and pursue a more lasting peace.

The US president suggested that the Alyoshki operation and the White House meeting could serve as stepping stones toward a broader settlement.

The developments come ahead of another round of US-mediated trilateral negotiations scheduled for November 10-11 in Abu Dhabi. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff and Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, are expected to lead the American delegation, while presidential aide Vladimir Medinsky will head the Russian team.

Kushner said on Thursday that American, European, NATO, and Ukrainian representatives held “productive” discussions on a “broader European security architecture.”

Moscow has insisted that a lasting settlement must address the underlying causes of the Ukraine conflict and Russia’s broader security concerns, including NATO’s eastward expansion. Russian officials have also ruled out direct European participation in the trilateral negotiations, arguing that the EU squandered its credibility by failing to uphold previous agreements and by encouraging Kiev to keep fighting to the last Ukrainian.

Trump’s renewed diplomatic push comes just days after Republicans suffered major defeats in the US midterm elections, losing control of both chambers of Congress. Russian analysts have warned that the Democratic victory could complicate Washington’s efforts to negotiate with Moscow, although Trump retains considerable authority over foreign policy, meaning it may be too early for Kiev to celebrate and demand more US taxpayer money.
