Everton midfielder Jack Grealish will miss Friday’s Premier League encounter with Coventry as uncertainty continues over his return to the first team following a disciplinary matter.
The 31-year-old Manchester City loanee has been absent from Everton’s last two matches against Newcastle, in the Premier League and Carabao Cup, after reportedly missing a training session without permission.
Manager David Moyes confirmed on Thursday that Grealish would remain unavailable but indicated that the player could soon resume working with the squad.
“No, Jack is not available,” Moyes said. “I wouldn’t give you the plan but we will be working with Jack again soon.”
Everton have provided few details about the incident, previously attributing the midfielder’s absence to fitness concerns. Moyes has also declined to explain the circumstances surrounding the disciplinary issue.
Asked whether the forthcoming international break might provide an opportunity to settle the matter, the Everton manager offered little indication of a timetable.
“We just need to wait and see how things go,” he said.
Grealish returned to Everton for a second loan spell this season as he sought to revive his career after losing his regular place at Manchester City, where he arrived in a £100 million transfer in 2021.
Despite helping City secure a historic Treble in the 2022-23 season, the England international subsequently struggled to maintain a consistent starting role.
His first loan spell at Everton produced two goals in 22 appearances before injury brought his campaign to an early conclusion. He had featured just six times during his latest spell before the disciplinary issue arose.
With his Manchester City contract due to expire at the end of the season, the latest setback adds further uncertainty to his playing future.
