A fully functional 18-karat gold toilet titled America, created by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan, has been listed for auction at Sotheby’s with a guide price of USD $10 million.
The 103-kilogram artwork, once displayed as a working toilet at New York’s Guggenheim Museum and later stolen from England’s Blenheim Palace, is being sold by billionaire art collector and New York Mets owner Stephen Cohen.
The satirical piece, celebrated for blending humour with political commentary, gained international fame when Cattelan offered an identical version to the White House in 2016. Sotheby’s expects strong bidding for the controversial artwork in its fall contemporary art sale.
“I don’t do anything.” is his motto.
