South Korean author Han Kang wins Nobel Prize in literature

South Korean author Han Kang has been awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature, praised for her “intense poetic prose” that confronts historical traumas and explores the fragility of human life.

At 53, she is the first South Korean and 18th woman to receive the award, joining previous winners like Toni Morrison and Kazuo Ishiguro.

Han, best known internationally for her 2007 novel The Vegetarian, gained global recognition when it won the 2016 Man Booker International Prize. Her works, which address themes of violence, grief, and patriarchy, have been published in over 30 languages.
