The oldest known Ten Commandments tablet, inscribed in Paleo-Hebrew and dated between 300–800 AD, is set to go under the hammer in New York on 18 December.
Discovered during railroad excavations in the Middle East in 1913, the artifact was once repurposed as a paving stone before its significance was realised. The tablet, which includes a Samaritan directive to worship on Mount Gerizim, is anticipated to sell for $1–2 million at auction.
1–2 million at auction.
I expect it would go for more, it’s quite old. Obviously not the original.
They used it as a paving stone, that’s something you could do, incorporate it into your courtyard.
” incorporate it into your courtyard ”
Probably the most sensible end-use for a carved rock commemorating a mythical event that purports to have taken place approximately 2,000 years before it was even made.
It eventually sold for 5 million – proving once and for all the perverse value system that seems to accompany the obscene wealth accumulated under an even more perverse unfettered capitalist system.
I’ve got a burnt gorse bush that looks just like the illustration in my old school Bible of Moses having a chinwag with God. I’ll let it go for 50 bucks. Any takers?
