Leftovers can make for quick lunches, snacks, or even late-night bites, but food experts caution against relying on the microwave for reheating certain items.
Microwaves often heat unevenly, leaving cold spots that could harbour bacteria, and they can ruin the texture and taste of some foods. Here are five surprising items to avoid microwaving, experts told Fox News recently.
Hard-boiled eggs may seem like a convenient snack, but microwaving them can cause pressure to build inside, leading to explosive results—on your plate or even in your mouth. For vitamin C-rich foods like bell peppers or broccoli, microwaving destroys the heat-sensitive vitamin, making them best eaten raw.
Chicken, while safe to reheat, often loses its moisture and flavour, so experts suggest repurposing it cold, like in a chicken salad. Seafood, on the other hand, dries out quickly in the microwave, resulting in a rubbery texture and less-than-pleasant aroma. Lastly, reheating steak in a microwave strips it of its tender texture, leaving it unevenly heated, dry, and tough.
For these foods, ditch the microwave and explore alternative methods to enjoy your leftovers.
