Zulu King Misuzulu kaZwelithini has publicly challenged Professor Musa Xulu to a stick fight during the annual Reed Dance, saying the professor’s comments insulted him and the entire Zulu nation.
The king, 50, told thousands gathered at his new royal palace that he would defend Zulu culture against critics.
Prof Xulu, 64, said he believed the king was angered by his criticism of the multimillion-rand move to a new palace, which he argued was wasteful, but stressed that discussing public finance was not an insult.
He added he had not fought with sticks since childhood and feared for his safety after receiving threats.
Misuzulu, crowned in 2022 after a contested succession, presides over South Africa’s largest ethnic group, whose monarchy retains significant cultural influence despite having no formal political power.
