Entomologist and tutor Rashmi Kant, 51, has been convicted of indecently assaulting three of his school-age students while tutoring them in 2023 and 2024.

The Napier District Court heard victim impact statements describing lasting psychological and emotional harm, with Judge Bridget Mackintosh noting the young women should have been “going out with a spring in their step” but were instead left struggling with trust and self-worth.

The behaviour included touching the victims’ thighs and breasts over their clothing, and in one instance, placing his hand inside a student’s bra.

A jury found Kant guilty on 11 charges, rejecting his claim the touching was accidental or congratulatory. Judge Mackintosh sentenced him to 11 months’ home detention with further restrictions, counselling, and reparation payments to the victims, citing breaches of trust, repeated offending, and emotional trauma caused.
