Celebrated Indian industrialist Ratan Tata passes away, aged 86

Ratan Tata, the former chairman of Tata Group and one of India’s most influential industrialists, has passed away at the age of 86.

Admitted to Breach Candy hospital in Mumbai following health complications, Tata’s condition worsened despite earlier assurances that his visit was routine.

Tata Group confirmed his passing, describing him as a transformative leader who shaped not only the company but also India’s industrial landscape.

Ratan Tata, who joined the family business after earning a degree from Cornell University, played a pivotal role in expanding Tata Group into a multinational powerhouse during his two-decade leadership. Under his guidance, the group grew into a $100 billion conglomerate, famous for landmark acquisitions like Tetley, Jaguar, and Land Rover.

Tata’s passing has drawn widespread tributes from India’s top political and business figures.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi lauded him as a visionary who provided steady leadership to one of India’s oldest business houses while also dedicating himself to philanthropic causes.

Industry leaders such as Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani echoed these sentiments, calling Tata’s death a significant loss for the nation. Google CEO Sundar Pichai also highlighted Tata’s global legacy in business and philanthropy. Maharashtra, where Tata Group is headquartered, has declared a day of mourning, and a public tribute will be held at the National Centre for Performing Arts in Mumbai before his final rites.
