Flybuys to shut down after nearly three decades

Flybuys news

After a run of nearly 30 years, Flybuys, one of New Zealand’s most popular loyalty programs, is set to close by the end of this year.

Launched in 1996 by Loyalty New Zealand, Flybuys quickly became a household name, amassing 2.9 million members and reaching 80 percent of New Zealand households.

The programme, which was a novel idea at its inception, offering coalition loyalty schemes and travel rewards, saw rapid growth.

The decision to close Flybuys comes as the landscape for loyalty programs evolves, with more businesses now able to create their proprietary loyalty schemes thanks to advanced technology.

Flybuys members have until October 31 to earn points and until December 31, 2024, to redeem them.

IAG New Zealand announced the acquisition of some of Loyalty NZ’s assets and will extend job offers to about one-third of its staff. For more details on the closure and point redemption, members can visit the Flybuys website or contact them by phone on 0800 FLYBUYS (0800 359 2897).
