5.3 magnitude earthquake hits central NZ

The quake was centred 30km south-west of St. Arnaud at a depth of 54km.

The quake caused moderate shaking in the top of the South Island and lower regions of the North Island.

‘If you weren’t already thinking about earthquake readiness after New Zealand ShakeOut this week, earthquakes like this are a good reminder to be prepared. Remember to Drop, Cover and Hold if you feel shaking, and know your tsunami evacuation route if you live near the coast,’ a later statement from GeoNet said.

GeoNet’s official report on the event can be read here.
