An Air New Zealand flight en route from Christchurch to Auckland was forced to divert to Nelson early this morning after an emergency was declared.

The airline reported that the Dash 8-300 aircraft landed safely in Nelson shortly after 7 a.m. following an air conditioning malfunction.

The flight, identified as NZ5966, was a repositioning operation, meaning no passengers were on board as the crew aimed to align with future flight schedules.

Captain David Morgan, Chief Operational Integrity and Safety Officer told media the issue was managed by the two pilots on board, and the aircraft will now undergo a detailed inspection by engineering and maintenance teams to assess the fault.

  1. Air conditioners from ACM’s fail all of the time. Normally, when they do, pressurisation drops in the cabin, and the mask drop-down via barometric sensors / aneroid wafers.
Aircraft that use bleed air for direct pressurisation / air conditioning are usually not allowed for passenger usage by most regulations due to the risk of CO. Exception; military aircraft, where O2 is available when the CO light goes on…

    • A noteworthy observation.
I arrived in NZ in 1997 fully rated as a Pilot and Aircraft Engineer, and Air NZ continued to refuse my CV and application.
I noticed that even back then only certain individuals were getting hired; those with wealthy connections, and those from SW Asia. A few came out of the Tertiary Institutions here in NZ, but of course the cost to achieve that in the end was NZ$115K on the average.
Plus, the entry level pay id piss poor! A city bus driver makes more money, and most junior Pilots and Aircrew have to share a ‘Crash Pad’ with up to 8 other Pilots, Flight Engineers, and Cabin Crew.
I foresee a time in the very, very near future where all of the current pilots who have been ‘vaccinated’ with the Covid bio-weapon vaccine will start to die-off pre-maturely, or fail the CAA Class 1 & 2 Medical Exams as a result of vaccine-related health problems. When that happens, the airlines, charter services, maybe even the Air Force will be putting out Beggars Calls for Pilots who they never considered hiring in the past…
When that happens, my response to Air NZ will be this; “Where were you when I needed a job”?
But the final sentence will be; “don’t ever call or contact me again!”
      & BTW- I’M UNVACCINATED!!!
