Aviation security boss quits after IPCA criticises handling of McSkimming allegations

Chris de Wattignar news

Former police senior leader Chris de Wattignar has resigned from his aviation security role at the Civil Aviation Authority after the IPCA’s damning report into how police handled sexual offending allegations against ex–Deputy Commissioner Jevon McSkimming.

Identified in the report as Deputy Commissioner PLC, de Wattignar had been on leave following its release, with the CAA confirming he chose to step down to avoid reputational damage to the agency.

The IPCA found he failed to exercise independent judgement despite clear warnings from integrity staff, relying instead on assurances from then-Commissioner Andrew Coster and Deputy Commissioner Tania Kura.

While the watchdog noted some mitigation, it said his belief that he lacked authority highlighted serious structural issues within Police Integrity and Conduct. The CAA will now begin appointing his replacement and has declined further comment.
