Epidemiologist Michael Baker has criticised the Ministry of Health’s decision to stop funding FluTracking New Zealand, claiming it will create a significant gap in monitoring respiratory illness.
The online survey tool, which cost about $57,000 a year, collected weekly data from roughly 40,000 participants on ‘flu-like symptoms’, testing and vaccination status, providing year-round insight into influenza, Covid-19 and RSV trends.
Baker said the programme was uniquely valuable because it captured data from people who never sought medical care, a large group missing from hospital, GP and laboratory reporting. He also highlighted its importance in enabling direct comparisons with Australia, where the system operates nationally.
Baker told state media the move as ‘short-sighted’, noting FluTracking was one of the most cost-effective surveillance tools available and could not be easily replaced.
