Epidemiologist Dr. Michael Baker has criticised Health New Zealand’s decision to adopt a “business-as-usual approach” towards Covid-19 management amidst concerns over an alleged ‘resurgence’ of the ‘virus’.
Effective from Monday, individuals aged 14 and above will now have to pay for Covid-related visits to the GP, marking a shift in how pandemic-related healthcare is funded.
Health New Zealand defended the move as part of a broader strategy aimed at integrating Covid-19 management into ‘routine healthcare services’.
Dr. Martin Hefford. a director of Health New Zealand, told media the plan’s intent was to treat Covid-19 similarly to other communicable diseases, stressing continued access to certain funded services for prevention and management, particularly for vulnerable populations.
But Baker did not agree with this approach, telling state media there was an ongoing threat posed by Covid-19 which has persisted in causing significant transmission and multiple infection waves in New Zealand. Recent alleged hospitalisation rates and mortality figures underscoed the virus’s continued impact despite available vaccines, antivirals, and testing resources, he said. Baker advocated for a heightened response proportional to the current risk, urging stronger public health measures and unrestricted access to comprehensive healthcare services for respiratory infections.
Expressing concern over the economic and health consequences of a lax approach, Baker called for sustained government support and a collaborative effort among stakeholders to effectively combat Covid-19. He stressed the importance of a unified strategy to safeguard public health and mitigate the broader societal impact of the ongoing pandemic.
