Thousands are expected to honour Sir Robert Gillies, affectionately known as Bom, at his funeral today at Te Papaiouru marae in Rotorua.
As the last surviving member of the 28th Māori Battalion, Bom’s life and legacy will be celebrated by government dignitaries, military leaders, and his iwi.
Sir Robert, a humble critic of the limited recognition given to Māori soldiers, recently saw his battalion finally receive battle honours.
The Defense Force paid homage by supporting Bom’s tangi, while iwi members worked tirelessly to feed hundreds of mourners.
A special arrangement will bring his spirit to Waimarama Marae next January, honouring his wishes. Sir Robert will be laid to rest beside his wife, marking the end of an era for the legendary 28th Māori Battalion.
RIP a man worthy of respect.
