Christchurch eye surgeon jailed for attempted murder while dating District Court judge

Ian Dallinson news

Dr. Ian William Dallison, a prominent Christchurch eye surgeon, has been sentenced to six years and ten months in prison after pleading guilty to attempting to murder his landlord and wounding his landlord’s wife with intent to injure.

The incident occurred on August 4, 2022, in Lyttelton, and involved a violent altercation where Dallison fired a shot that narrowly missed his landlord, gouged his eye, and pistol-whipped his wife. It has been revealed that Dallison was dating Christchurch District Court Judge Jane Farish at the time of the attack, and she had connections with the victims, adding a layer of public interest to the case. Dallison’s financial troubles, including a bankruptcy adjudication for $247,000 in debt on the same day as the assault, were also highlighted during the court proceedings.

The Supreme Court’s recent judgment underscored the public’s right to know the full details of the case, including the involvement of Judge Farish.

The court heard how Dallison, once a respected surgeon who led a luxurious lifestyle, descended into financial ruin, which culminated in the violent confrontation with his former friend and landlord.

The victim sustained severe injuries affecting his vision, requiring specialist treatment, while his wife suffered a concussion and other injuries.
