Former Prime Minister Helen Clark and former National Party leader Don Brash have joined forces to criticise current Prime Minister Christopher Luxon for what they describe as a “radical change” in New Zealand’s foreign policy.
Their concern centres around Luxon’s recent comments in an interview with The Financial Times, where he indicated New Zealand’s willingness to disclose cases of Chinese espionage and openness to joining the AUKUS Pillar 2 defense partnership with the US, UK, and Australia. They argue the shift could jeopardise New Zealand’s crucial trade relationship with China.
In a joint statement, Clark and Brash highlighted that these developments represent a significant departure from New Zealand’s ‘traditionally independent’ foreign policy.
Clark, who led New Zealand when it signed a free trade agreement with China, and Brash, a former ACT leader, said that aligning too closely with US military interests and publicly calling out China could have severe implications for trade and economic security. They pointed out that no indication of such a policy shift was given during National’s election campaign, making Luxon’s recent statements ‘particularly surprising and concerning.’
Deputy Prime Minister David Seymour, currently acting in Luxon’s absence, dismissed claims of a drastic policy change, saying discussions about joining AUKUS Pillar 2 were ongoing under the previous government. Seymour defended the government’s stance on addressing Chinese espionage, contrasting it with the behaviour of democratic allies.
