Colombian President Gustavo Petro has accused the United States of murdering an innocent fisherman during a recent military strike on what Washington claimed was a drug-smuggling vessel.
Petro said Alejandro Carranza, described as a “lifelong fisherman,” was killed on September 16 when US forces targeted his disabled boat in Colombian territorial waters.
The president condemned the act as a violation of national sovereignty and said the vessel had sent a distress signal after its engine failed.
Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump defended the operation, calling it part of his campaign to eliminate “narcoterrorists” and claiming two smugglers were killed in the strike. Petro, whose relations with Trump have been tense, said Colombia is demanding a full explanation from Washington.
