‘Disappointed’ hero student barred from overseas trip

Amy Law news

Amy Law was barred from a school trip to Greece by Long Bay College due to concerns over her mental state following a traumatic incident.

Law, who had witnessed a fatal stabbing at Albany Bus Station and provided first aid to the victim, who later died in hospital, was praised by police and awarded a Merit Coin for her bravery.

But just 24 hours before the trip, the school’s counselor informed Law’s mother that a risk assessment concluded Law was unfit to travel. Law and her parents, along with victim support workers, met with principal CJ Healey, who expressed concerns about Law being a liability and potentially unable to handle trauma during the trip.

The decision shocked victim support workers and the detective involved in the stabbing case, who both supported Law.

Law’s parents appealed to the college’s board of trustees and lodged a complaint with the Ministry of Education, but the exclusion was upheld.

Board deputy chair Steve Piner emphasised the school’s thorough risk analysis process. Principal Healey stated the school prioritized student health and safety and would review their response to complex cases. Law’s mother expressed disappointment and concern that the incident had damaged her daughter’s trust in authority.

  1. The school was worried that she might be unable to handle trauma, that was unlikely to occur.

So they refused her travelling with them, so close to going. Which sounds pretty traumatising to me.

That is just an a***hole decision. Shame on them

  2. The only good thing is
She will not have to be called as witness in any trail
But no doubt will be required to attend the Coroners Court
Which can be a harrowing experience

  3. Since when was a MoE psychologist consulted? Never maybe???
This is why we home-schooled our child, to avoid such exclusional bullshit that seems to be directed at certain types of students (Neuro-Diverse, and / or those who have experienced tragedy and dysfunction at the hands of ‘society’) who they do not want in their midst.
I would sue the MoE, and file a complaint with the HRC thru the family lawyer.
That way, when the out-of-court settlement is reached, then the entire family can go to Greece together, without the trappings of politically-correct and woke MoE / school staff members!

    • Yip, I remember not too long ago when they pepper sprayed teens, used chokeholds on female shoppers and ran police horses over little old ladies from Darwin.

For their “health and safety” 😐👍
