Ellerslie double-murder: Accused appears in court

Joseph Kwok news

The 42-year-old man entered no plea and did not seek bail when he appeared in the Auckland District Court today.

He will next appear on 29 November. He is charged with murdering Fuk-Fu Joseph Kwok (66) and his wife Mei Han Chong (67) by stabbing them to death.

Police were alerted on 5 Novmber when Kwok was found unresponsive in the couple’s Celtic Crescent home in Ellerslie. He later succumbed to his injuries. A search for Chong started, centering on the movements of a blue-green Kia Rio owned by the couple.

Police announced this morning that Chong’s body had been found in bush area in Greenhithe. The vehicle was located at an unrelated address in Glenfied with its number plates changed.

The accused has been resident in New Zealand for a number of years and did not requrie a Cantonese interpreter, legacy media reported. He was remanded in custody and granted interim name suppression, which included an order prohibiting publication of his occupation and address.

Head of the police investigation Detective Scott Beard told a press conference there were no links to organised crime at this stage. He described the fatal attack on Kwok as ‘quite brutal’ and ‘targeted’. A scene examination of the home continues, while there were a number of other locations police had to investigate.
