Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ) has confirmed it received a 111 call at 5.48am on the morning of the Mount Maunganui landslide reporting a slip near the Beachside Holiday Park and notified Tauranga City Council, the landowner, within minutes.
FENZ told state media it did not deploy firefighters because the reported slip was assessed as not impacting life or property. FENZ says responsibility at that point sat with the council as landowner.
Nearly four hours later, a major landslide struck the park, destroying vehicles and facilities and leaving six people missing.
Tauranga City Council is now a key focus for investigators assessing duty-of-care responsibilities, with WorkSafe indicating it will examine the roles of all organisations involved once recovery efforts are complete.
The council has committed to a full independent review but says it will not comment further until investigations conclude, while recovery operations at the site remain ongoing.
The duck diving commences, a 111 call should have resulted in more than another phone call, it should have lead to boots on the ground.
Seems like FENZ f’d up to me. Why didn’t they attend or call the campground themselves?
That is what 111 is for, innit
I was told that if I was caught at work without my PPE on I could be personally liable for a fine of up to $6000, can a council employee be held personally liable in these kind of cases or is that kind of personnel liability just for us plebs?
Mentally disabled individuals cannot be held criminally responsible.
Zero accountability from this cancer of the community
No one could be bothered.
Seems that way. Same as Gabrielle – too busy on holiday despite the weather warnings to bother doing their jobs of alerting people
