Former NZDF member speaks out on COVID jab health and mandate battle

Staff Sergeant Patrick McCarthy, former drum major of the New Zealand Army Band, has shared a personal account of his military service, health struggles, and experience during the COVID-19 vaccine rollout in an interview with The Tribute web series.

McCarthy, a third-generation soldier inspired from childhood by his father’s time in an artillery band, described his decades-long career in the military as a passion and honour, including leading what he called “the face of the army” through performances and ceremonial duties. He also served in a security liaison role at managed isolation facilities during the pandemic, where he reviewed COVID-19 cases and said he observed no deaths among those in quarantine at the time.

His account centres on the period in 2021 when COVID-19 vaccinations became mandatory within the New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF). McCarthy said he was initially hesitant but ultimately felt pressured to comply due to leadership expectations and his role as a senior figure. He received the vaccine on May 12, 2021, after which he says his health rapidly declined.

According to McCarthy, he experienced severe and ongoing symptoms including fatigue, pain, breathing difficulties, and neurological issues. He said his condition worsened over time, culminating in a medical emergency in which he was hospitalised and later diagnosed with having suffered two strokes. He also described a prolonged struggle to receive consistent medical assessment and support.

McCarthy said aspects of his condition were not fully acknowledged by military or health authorities, and was highly criticial of Defence Force leadership, claiming systemic failures in how affected personnel were treated. He also referenced ongoing disputes around medical recognition and support.

Despite his health challenges, McCarthy said he remains motivated to speak publicly, citing his family and a desire to raise awareness. He also reflected on how the experience has strengthened his personal beliefs and outlook on life.
