New Caledonia’s police force has received state-of-the-art armoured trucks equipped with machine guns from France, aiming to quell further violent protests and restore order.
Despite the lifting of the state of emergency last Tuesday, a heavy-handed security presence of over 3000 personnel will remain in the territory until after the Paris Olympics.
Minister of the Interior and Overseas Territories, Gérald Darmanin, announced the deployment of the Centaur vehicles capable of firing tear gas and, if necessary, remotely operated machine guns. The deployment has been framed by Paris as a measure to end roadblocks and re-establish public order but there are concerns the deployment is a sign of escalating militarisation that will perpetuate a cycle of resistance and repression.
Journalist Coralie Cochin told state media she was witnessing daily confrontations between police and protesters. In the northern suburb of Dubea roadblocks and fires disrupt daily life. Cochin highlights the disparity in power, noting the fear among the Kanak people facing heavily armed police with nothing but stones to defend themselves.
Armour vehicles are useless in built up areas, they will be taken out with Molotov’s easily.
