Iran warns US a ground invasion will be a ‘second Vietnam’

US ground invasion of Iran

Iran has warned that any United States ground invasion would become a “second Vietnam” as fighting across the Middle East continues to intensify and energy markets react sharply to the conflict.

US President Donald Trump has criticised allied countries for refusing to support Washington’s push to fully reopen the Strait of Hormuz, with no nation yet committing naval forces to the strategic waterway, which Iran says remains closed to what it describes as enemy states, including the US and Israel.

A German government spokesperson said the conflict was unrelated to NATO and “not NATO’s war,” while British Prime Minister Keir Starmer said discussions were continuing around “a viable collective plan” without outlining specific action. Global oil prices have risen above US$100 a barrel, more than 40 percent higher than before the war began, fuelling concern over a wider energy crisis, while US petrol prices have climbed to their highest level since October 2023 and diesel prices are nearing US$5 a gallon.

In the latest military developments, Israel said it had launched “limited and targeted ground operations” against Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon, while a missile strike on a civilian vehicle in Abu Dhabi reportedly killed one person and Dubai airport was temporarily closed after a drone hit an oil storage site.

  1. Israel simply does not have the numbers, whilst the US would face a logistical nightmare, not to mention a population that’s huge and dispersed across a massive area of land, that HATES them. Plus Iran’s very capable military and any third parties would decide to help. Any ground invasion would be hell on earth for the GMO munchers.
