Christchurch real estate agent Amanda Blair is in intensive care in Bali after suffering serious injuries in a scooter accident.
Blair, who was on holiday in Lombok, was thrown from her 125cc moped, leading to a punctured lung, head injuries, and severe lacerations.
Her insurance policy with 1CoverNZ does not cover the incident because it only applies to scooters with engines of 50cc or less, leaving the family facing over $18,000 in medical bills so far.
According to a report in legacy media, Blair’s partner, Cameron Mitchell, and family members are struggling to manage the situation and understand the complexities of her treatment due to language barriers and the severity of her condition.
Blair underwent emergency surgery and remains on a breathing pump in the hospital, with her recovery timeline uncertain.
The situation has put immense stress on her partner, who was unaware of the insurance stipulation regarding the engine size of the moped.
A Givealittle page has been set up to help cover the mounting medical costs.
Hope she can come out of the situation, with a speedy recovery.
However-
READ the policy exclusions before going anywhere when Travel Insurance is taken-out.
Does ACC cover this type of situation offshore and overseas? Probably not…
Will be she well enough to get home to NZ?
Will anyone going to Bali or returning with their private jet / turboprop be able to offer them a ride home where recovery can continue, provided that she can be transferred?
Going on holidays in the Orient / Asia or anywhere else does not mean that you’re immune from bad things happening or that you’re bullet proof or ‘she’ll be right, mate’ attitudes; travel with caution, and be aware of the situations around you.
Shifty insurance companies, they probably know that there are no scooters for rent in Asia that are less than 50cc.
