A senior partner at a major law firm is facing a disciplinary tribunal after allegedly engaging in inappropriate conduct during Christmas functions, including grabbing a solicitor’s genitals in what was described as a “joke gone too far.”
The incident occurred in the middle of a dance circle, with the solicitor acknowledging the partner’s reputation for “boisterous behaviour” but recognising that the actions were inappropriate in a professional setting.
The tribunal, which began hearing evidence yesterday, is examining whether such behaviour at work-related social events falls within the scope of “regulated services” and whether it would be considered “disgraceful or dishonorable”.
Additional allegations include inappropriate physical contact with younger staff and summer clerks, as well as making sexualised comments about people’s appearances and preferences, including calling one junior a “creepy c***”.
Former employees have testified that the partner’s actions left them uncomfortable, with one summer clerk fearing for his job security due to the power imbalance. Another former solicitor recalled the partner asking if she was single while intoxicated, behaviour she found “strange.” Despite concerns that the law firm might attempt to cover up the incidents, affected employees stated that they were supported.
The accused partner is expected to testify later this week, with the hearing set to conclude on Wednesday. Interim suppression orders are in place to protect the identities of all individuals involved and that of the law firm.
