A lawyer has been fined $5,000 by the Law Society for ‘conduct unbecoming a member of the legal profession.’
The charge related to events during the lawyer’s own divorce some 20 years ago when she transferred her house to a trust so her ex-husband couldn’t make a claim on it. She later had the trust sell her back the property.
The lawyer, who the Law Society decided not to name, was reported by a colleague after confessing the story to him/her.
The lawyer admitted the charge, and was said to have been ‘appalled’ at her actions in hindsight. She was fined $5,000 and found guilty of conduct unbecoming.
