Prime Minister Christopher Luxon has called for anyone with evidence regarding allegations of a paedophile ring involving politicians and civil servants in the 1980s to come forward to the police.
This appeal follows the Royal Commission of Inquiry into Abuse in Care’s report, which, while uncovering significant evidence of widespread abuse from 1950 to 1999, could not substantiate claims of organised group abuse by individuals in public positions, said to have taken place in the Wellington and Horowhenua regions, due to a lack of direct evidence. Despite one case being referred to the police, progress has been slow, and Luxon emphasised the need for more witnesses to support any further investigations or prosecutions.
The Commission’s report, encompassing roughly 3000 pages and 16 volumes, highlighted severe systemic abuse, including physical, racial, ableist, and sexual abuse, in state and faith-based care.
The findings revealed persistent factors contributing to such abuse, indicating ongoing risks.
Luxon reassured that the government supports reopening investigations and new prosecutions if more evidence is brought forward. Survivors, who might find the process of recounting their experiences traumatic, are encouraged to access their records through the Survivor Experience Service to aid the police.
