South Islanders witnessed a spectacular fireball streaking across the sky near Wānaka late last night, followed by a loud sonic boom as a meteorite entered Earth’s atmosphere.
The fireball blazed above Queenstown around 11 p.m. before burning out over Southland, with Fireballs Aotearoa suggesting a small fragment may have landed in the remote Eyre Mountains.
Although heavy cloud cover made precise tracking difficult, eyewitnesses described the sky suddenly lighting up, followed by a delayed boom that rattled homes.
If recovered, the meteorite would be New Zealand’s 11th documented find.
Damn, just missed Wellington! Oh well
