Michael ‘River of Filth’ Wood to re-enter politics

Former Labour cabinet minister Michael Wood has confirmed he will attempt a political comeback, announcing he will again contest Mt Roskill in 2026 after losing the long-held Labour seat to National’s Carlos Cheung in 2023.

Wood acknowledged the “real mistakes” that ended his ministerial career — including undisclosed shareholdings that led to his resignation and an apology before Parliament — but said he has “taken responsibility” and is ready to contribute again.

His return is likely to reignite debate over past controversies, including the public outrage that followed his description of elements of the 2022 anti-mandate protest as a “river of filth.”

Wood said many in the electorate feel “forgotten and neglected,” and he believes his experience and resilience make him the right person to represent them as the redrawn boundaries reshape the seat ahead of the next election.

  1. River of Filth it says as he looks in the mirror and opens what passes for a mouth. Unusual biological organism. Clearly at home in politics.
