New cancer drugs expected soon, but full rollout to take over a year

Cancer funding news

New Zealand is set to see the introduction of new cancer drugs in the coming months, following the government’s commitment of $604 million in additional funding for Pharmac over the next four years.

This funding will cover up to 54 new medicines, including 26 cancer treatments. Despite the announcement, it could take over a year for all the newly-funded treatments to become available. Health Minister Shane Reti told legacy media that while some drugs will be accessible by October or November, the complete rollout will extend over the following 12 months.

This funding initiative aims to rectify National’s broken election promise after it failed to include funding for 13 specific cancer treatments in the previous month’s Budget, causing distress among patients.

Yesterday Prime Minister Christopher Luxon said that integrating the funding into the existing Pharmac model was deemed more effective than creating a new agency. Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins welcomed the increased funding but criticised the government’s handling of the promise, arguing it should have been included in the initial Budget to avoid unnecessary anxiety and uncertainty among patients.

  1. NO A FOUR YEAR phase in and only because the likes of the public and the Taxpayers Union SHAMED them into doing so. Even though they campaigned on offering this this pre election.

    This from the Taxpayers Union:

“First the good news: moments ago, the Prime Minister announced that the Government will be increasing funding to Pharmac by $604 million (that’s nearly $300/household) over the next four years for essential medicines like cancer drugs.”

    • Curing cancer = a once off payday.

“Treating” cancer = multiple huge payments over an extended period as you slowly wither away and max out your credit, your savings and your assets. And when you inevitably still expire at the end of all their “treatment”, they get to say, “oh well, we did what we could 🤷🏼‍♂️”

A patient cured is a customer lost. The medical industry is evil.

  2. So BigPharma who created the wave of cancer & turbo cancer get to clip the ticket again. Boy do they play the long game. Create the problem and provide the solution. Merck, Astrazeneca, Pfizer & Roche.

  3. It’s going to take a year due to with-holding $$$ back from PharMac purchases of the medications.
How many will die before then???
This was a political move, and was NOT done out of sympathy and kindness by the Government.
    Covid Vaccines proved that…!
Fact is, with 175,000 people needing critical medications, you can bet that probably 5,000 of those with terminal illnesses / conditions would go after certain entities that denied them their legal and lawful meds via potential Lone Wolf actions. THAT is what scared the government into funding the meds!
THAT, along with drug funding that has been a broken promise initially by the UniParty is why the Bald-Headed One did a U-Turn, and then without any apology for their first action of scrapping the meds then presents the image that he and the UniParty are doing those who are ill and in need of the meds a great favour!
Hypocrisy matching ‘Dame’ Jabby, and Chippy, who is still in Parliament after threatening to ‘hunt down’ the non-vaxxers!

  4. Let’s hope these drugs arrive quickly enough for the 170 000 individuals (as at yesterday ) who would likely significantly benefit from them. It is incredible to think that just the stroke of a pen in our Govt ticking a funding box can make such a fundamental difference to so many lives.
This initiative did deserve earlier intervention (no thanks to Labour) and it will be imperative for this to be backed up by having the available Health staff and equipment to administer and monitor.
Great to now see some movement and clarity on this critically important issue.

  5. Gorgeous Golriz has MS, for which she needs these meds, along with Zoloft or Serax for PTSD!
Both conditions cause a shift in brain chemistry that invokes obsessive compulsive disorders, ie shoplifting…building a uranium stockpile of yellow cake, …you get the pic!
& Julie Anne needs to investigate gobbling a sedative to help stop those outbursts on the House Flo’!
    Chloe has similar conditions…but all have one thing in common;
They’re are all feminists, all are lawyers, and all of them on medications!
THEY CAN’T HELP IT HAVING BEEN IN THE HOSTILE OLD BOY MASONIC ENVIRONMENT OF THE PARLIAMENT…!

  6. Ivermectin is apparently good at curing some types of cancer, as well as COVID.
How about making it available without prescription?
Now that would be a refreshing change.
