Critics of New Zealand’s free trade agreement with India are accusing the Government of undermining local growers by committing New Zealand expertise and resources to help develop India’s apple and kiwifruit sectors.
Online commentary circulating after details of the agreement emerged claims the deal will require New Zealand agencies and industry groups to assist India with horticultural development, including technical expertise, plant variety rights, cold-chain infrastructure and supply-chain integration.
The criticism centres on provisions within the agreement’s Apple and Kiwifruit Action Plans, which reportedly include the establishment of “Centres of Excellence” in India aimed at improving production systems, food safety standards, post-harvest handling and commercialisation capabilities.
Opponents argue the arrangements could eventually strengthen Indian competitors using New Zealand-developed expertise and premium cultivars, including varieties associated with companies such as Zespri.
Some critics also raised concerns over provisions they say allow India to suspend New Zealand market access for apples and kiwifruit if it determines New Zealand has failed to meet obligations under the action plans.
The agreement’s dispute resolution framework has also come under scrutiny, with opponents claiming certain horticultural cooperation provisions are excluded from formal dispute settlement processes.
Commentary surrounding the agreement has triggered strong reactions online, with some accusing politicians of “selling-out” by compromising New Zealand growers by effectively helping to build competing industries overseas. Others compared the situation to Western companies transferring manufacturing expertise to China in previous decades, arguing it risked creating long-term competition using shared intellectual property and technology.

Only a fool would agree to this. National shooting itself in its foot. Labour willing to enable them to do it. BOTH are our enemies.
Considering the size of the worlds population & india being on the other side of the planet & in a different season zone i don’t see an issue.. Its possible india will under cut however name brand is everything & nobody flinches at buying an iphone…The issue i have is the corruption & transfer of ip by india to other countries
