New Zealand is reinstating United Nations-mandated sanctions on Iran due to Tehran’s ongoing failure to meet its nuclear obligations, Foreign Minister Winston Peters announced on Friday.
Peters said the decision reflects global concern over Iran’s “unjustifiable levels of uranium enrichment” and its non-compliance with the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).
The new regulations, taking effect on 18 October, impose asset freezes, travel bans, and trade restrictions on nuclear and military goods, as well as new obligations for New Zealanders to exercise caution in dealings with Iran.
A compulsory registration scheme for those conducting business with Iran will begin on 1 February 2026 to ensure legitimate trade continues under strict oversight. Peters urged Iran to resume cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency and return to negotiations to prevent further nuclear proliferation.

Israelies are not subject to full nuclear inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) because it is not a signatory to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
Israelies have never signed the NPT, which means it is not legally obligated to allow IAEA inspectors access to its nuclear facilities.
As a result, the IAEA cannot enforce comprehensive inspections or safeguards on Israelie nuclear sites.
Israelies maintain a policy of “nuclear ambiguity”, neither confirming nor denying possession of nuclear weapons.
This stance has drawn international criticism, especially from countries like Russia, Iran, and Qatar, which have called for inspections and transparency.
In June 2025, Russia’s UN envoy criticized the Israelies exemption from inspections during a Security Council session.
A 2015 IAEA resolution calling for inspections of Israelie nuclear facilities was defeated, with opposition from the US, UK, France, and Germany.
Qatar reiterated its demand for IAEA access to Israelie sites, citing regional security concerns.
