‘Open Electricity reforms’ aim to cut power costs for consumers

Open Electricity reforms in place to help consumers

The Government has confirmed the retail electricity sector will be brought under the Customer and Product Data Act, a move it says will make it easier for households and small businesses to compare power plans and reduce electricity costs.

Energy Minister Simon Watts and Commerce and Consumer Affairs Minister Scott Simpson said the initiative, known as Open Electricity, follows the rollout of ‘Open Banking’, with regulations for that system having come into force in December last year.

Watts said consumers currently face an overwhelming choice, with more than 15,000 residential electricity plans on the market, making it difficult to identify the most suitable option. He said Open Electricity would allow people to securely access and share their own electricity usage data, enabling faster and more accurate comparisons across all available plans.

Recent energy-saving campaigns have shown customers who switched plans saved an average of $358 a year, Watts said, adding that the reforms could also reduce costs through more efficient electricity use and lower demand during peak periods. He said better access to consumption data would also help households make informed decisions about investments such as solar panels or electric vehicles.

The changes are expected to benefit around two million households and approximately 165,000 small businesses. Consumers are expected to begin seeing changes from September this year, with the full rollout scheduled to be completed by mid-2027.

Simpson said the current system for accessing electricity usage data was slow, inconsistent, and limited consumers’ ability to shop around. He said existing comparison tools often rely on average usage figures, which do not accurately reflect individual consumption patterns.

By allowing secure access to personalised data, Mr Simpson said Open Electricity would support stronger competition in the market and encourage the development of new and more innovative electricity products, ultimately helping customers get better value for money.

  1. Oh what a crock of s***. Regulation without regulation. Prices are through the ceiling, so knowing which one of the overpriced entities, can get to screw you, makes little to no difference. NZ is a under regulated nation, compared to many developed nations, regarding electricity price control. Another pathetic move by National. Hope you are out next election. I wont be voting for you or your friends, that’s for sure. (oh and yes I have voted for ACT/NZF in past before some imbecilic troll chimes in).

    • Check out the New Zealand Loyal Party…there we all have a positive choice.
Since Loyal has been targeted with being unable to open a bank account via de-banking, and has put forth the effort to question the Christchurch massacre video (proven false / deceptive in part), and since the leadership of New Zealand Loyal Party is being threatened with J3wdicial action via Shabbos-Goy Ardern for viewing the video in NZ, this means that THEY ARE THE RIGHT ONES FOR THE JOB IN 2026!!!
New Zealand Loyal leadership had to fly to Thailand to view the video..
They are calling for accountability which, as we all know, has been unattainable over the last 40+ years.
That may change IF KIWIS GO AND VOTE FOR SOMETHING DIFFERENT, INSTEAD OF THE UNI-PARTY AND IT’S LESSER MINIONS OF ZIONIST BOOT LICKERS…!

      • What do You mean by the Christchurch Mosque Attacks video was false/deceptive in part?
It is quite obvious Kelvyn in stating that people died at Christchurch but not in the video
Is separating and distancing Himself from the two aspects
Which is understandable in considering His current legal predicament
In being hauled over the coals on fake false trumped up charges
Counterspin although not perfect was well intentioned in pursuit of the truth for which they have paid the price

    • It doesn’t matter whether it’s team blue or team red (or even Winston) next election. The owners of the country still get the agenda they want. Always.

      • Look at Germany, France and the UK. All on the cusp of better government because people refuse to go on voting as per usual. That’s a self defeating fiction told to people to get them to give in and keep doing what they have always done.

    • Exactly… “Prices are through the ceiling, so knowing which one of the overpriced entities, can get to screw you, makes little to no difference.”

Price colluding cartels can’t exist without corrupt politicians.

Watts, Simpson, and Willis are telling Kiwis continuous lies to maintain the ( mostly Australian run) cartels super profits!

There are plenty of market studies explaining the existence of the cartels and what to do about them. Willis, Simpson, and Watts bought more time for the cartels by ordering more studies, the ignoring the repeated study recommendationsm.

The ability of these despicable ministers to protect the “kiwi life ruining” australian and kiwi price colluding cartels, by implementing changes they know won’t make a jot of difference to your wallet emptying costs, can only occur if their leaders are corrupt.

Isn’t that right messrs Luxon, Seymour, and Peters?

Luxon said he’ll fix the joint, but it turns out Luxon mispoke. He really meant to say he’ll f&%k the joint.

    • Unfortunately nz first and act are both supporting the multi decade, aussie lead, great Kiwi robbery.

So voting for Seymour or Winston won’t save you.

  2. So we will now have access to all of your power usage and that will make it cheaper for you.
Its not about tracking you and later on charging you for the fiasco called climate CO2 charges.
You dont need to track usage to regulate power, I mean come on.
How will our data be protected from govt miss-use ?

  3. It wasn’t that long ago that privatisation was being sold by the government as a way to introduce competition to reduce prices. Well, thinking about it it was quite a long time ago, but either way.
The uni-party works for business, preferably multi-nationals, not the “citizen” – the word citizen would be dropped in favour of serf if they were being honest.

  4. The prefix “Open” is the calling card of the globalists who dream of a one-world government which is to be controlled by a selected “elite”. The prefix can be traced back to at least the early 20th century with HG Well’s book “The Open Conspiracy” (in an era when “conspiracy” hadn’t been co-opted by the CIA’s “conspiracy theory” psy-op to discredit dissent to the Warren Commission’s JFK “enquiry”) and more recently with Soro’s “Open Society” and various iterations thereof.

  5. Don’t forget the Water Meters, and Smart Electrical Meters, and Smart Gas Meters…all rigged to OVERCHARGE YOU just like the Medical, Life & Business Insurance Companies and their ‘model forecasting’…!
ALL of this ‘usage’ will be deternmined by ‘Social Credit’ (as it is now in several nation / states…), Digital I.D., and ‘personal Profiles’ of the citizen held by the government(s).
Let’s have a look at the double, illegal standard, shall we?
Maduro had machine guns in his possession in Venezuela, a sovereign nation.
Pam Bondi then files gun law violations in New York state against Maduro for having machine guns in…Venezuela!
    How’s that for ‘cross-border enforcement’…
Maybe Americans who are barred from their Second Amendment Right from owning firearrms in the U.S., but have moved to another country and have firearms in that other country will be charged with firearms violations back in the U.S…???
Bondi (aka ‘Blondie’..) never prosecuted Epstein to the fullest extent…and then we play the ‘Epstein Flies’ release with redacted / blacked out pages.
    BUT-
Someone figured-out how to un-redact / un-encrypt those pages using Word, Notebook, etc., and so over Christmas most of those ‘released’ pages were brought to light.

    https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2025/dec/23/epstein-unredacted-files-social-media
The same players who redacted the Epstein Files, and many other unrelated files that have also been redacted thus thwarting the FOIA / PA Request for Information are violating the First Amendment, and in other nations, the Right to Freedom of Expression / Speech.
We have NEVER had ‘freedom’…only ‘Liberty’ that governments dole out from time to time!

  6. So pretty much guaranteed that the price of electricity is about to INCREASE, just like every other time they’ve promised us cheaper electricity.
