More than 170 passengers have arrived safely in Israel after a FlyDubai flight was forced to make an emergency landing in Saudi Arabia following an alleged cockpit attack that sent the aircraft into a dramatic plunge.
The Boeing 737 was carrying 174 passengers, including 27 children, on a flight bound for Tel Aviv when an emergency unfolded roughly two hours into the journey. The aircraft transmitted distress signals, including a code associated with a possible hijacking, before rapidly losing around 4,500 metres of altitude in approximately one minute.
The incident prompted Israel to scramble fighter aircraft while Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu convened urgent security discussions.
According to accounts given by passengers, the first officer allegedly attacked the captain with a knife before attempting to crash the aircraft. Three Israeli passengers reportedly entered the cockpit after the injured captain managed to open the door and then fought to restrain the co-pilot.
One passenger told RT that the wounded pilot “managed to open the door,” enabling what he described as “three heroes” to enter the cockpit and overpower the alleged attacker.
One of the passengers involved later told Israel’s Channel 12 that the struggle lasted almost 25 minutes. The men reportedly used corded headphones to restrain the first officer after subduing him.
Matan Schlichter, whose father was seated near the front of the aircraft, described the chaotic scene, saying his father “saw the door open, and he saw the blood,” before attempting to assist in stopping the attacker.
Despite reportedly suffering stab wounds, the captain was able to help regain control of the aircraft. The plane subsequently landed safely at Tabuk Airport in northwestern Saudi Arabia.
Several media outlets identified the captain as Indian national Smit Machchhar. Passengers were later transferred to a replacement FlyDubai aircraft, which flew them from Saudi Arabia to Ben Gurion International Airport.
Relatives had gathered at the Tel Aviv airport as the replacement flight arrived, with Netanyahu also meeting passengers following their return.

One 51-year-old passenger was reported to have suffered upper-body injuries and was taken to hospital after reaching Israel. His condition was not considered serious.
Israeli security officials reportedly said they had no indication that Iran or another foreign state was behind the incident.
Netanyahu subsequently instructed Israeli authorities to “prepare for additional potential threats” and discussed the alleged hijacking attempt with Emirati President Mohammed bin Zayed. He was also expected to raise the incident with US President Donald Trump.
