A man has been arrested in Counties Manukau after allegedly impersonating a police officer and attempting to pull over an unmarked police vehicle during late-night patrols.
Police say officers noticed a station wagon following them that was fitted with flashing red and blue lights. The officers quickly realised the vehicle was not an official police car.
Inspector Kerry Watson said the bizarre situation became even more unusual when the driver appeared to realise he was attempting to stop police officers and tried to flee the area. The impersonator was located and stopped a short distance away and arrested without incident.
A 38-year-old man has been charged with impersonating a police officer and excess breath alcohol. He is due to appear in the Manukau District Court on 24 December.
Inspector Watson said the man was not only pretending to be police but was also more than twice the legal alcohol limit, describing the behaviour as dangerous and unacceptable.
Police reminded the public that impersonating police or representing a vehicle as a police vehicle is an offence under the Policing Act 2008 and urged people to report suspicious activity via 111 in emergencies or 105 after the fact.
An ill thought out plan. Funny though.
Sounds like an odd thing to do.
The bro should have arrested himself
