The police union is ‘disturbed’ by the government’s latest initiative to crack down on gangs, noting it does not include additional funding or staff.
A new national gang unit and district gang disruption teams are being established to remove patched gang members from the streets and reduce crime and intimidation.
Police Commissioner Andrew Coster indicated that this would involve reallocating existing resources and possibly new investments.
However, the announcement on Tuesday lacked specifics, and the Police Association was not consulted, according to its president, Chris Cahill.
Cahill told state media he was concerned that without increased funding and staffing, officers would be expected to do more with less. He said there are already over 250 vacancies in the force, and re-allocating officers to the gang unit would deplete frontline resources further.
“We don’t have the resources; we know we can’t meet the current demand,” Cahill said. “To make this work, police will need either more money, more staff, or to stop doing other essential tasks.”
I have heard they are having a hard time recruiting people, funny that. I guess people have their self respect and ethics to consider.

The “gang unit” will simply be another mouth to feed when the coppers already have the organised crime unit. Gangs are organised crime period. Classify them as orgnaised crime bodies and dela with them instead of dealing WITH them.

No concerns raised about giving them a million dollars to to get their patched members hooked on their product clean and back to the business of peddling it??
The corrections didn’t get less funding when courts were told to go soft and put them on home detention. So suck it up butter cups time to do your job. The rest of us new those approaches wouldn’t work, where we’re the big mouthed police union then???

The solution to the Gangs on the street problem is to classify gangs as terrorists, then you can use the Army against them, then the Police can stop and cordon off gang convoys, ask they to submit to searches and ID checks, if they don’t then call the Commandos in (who are on 24/7 standby) they will arrive in a few hours by helicopter in full body armour and armed and they will take them down with extreme prejudice and will take Patches for trophies.

This Gang Squad will eventually target the minor Political Parties (ie NZ Loyal, Outdoors & Freedom Party, New Conservative, etc) as the past actions of the ‘Boys in Blue” at Parliament 2 years ago and the ill treatment and injuries inflicted on Liz Gunn, Sue Gray and Alan are proof that the cops will continue their criminal gangster-like behaviours, while presenting the facade of fighting gang-related and gang-based crimes.
The governments of the world NEED THE GANGS, as in the NZ Economy, the underground gang-related wealth generation (ie drugs, firearms, etc.) keeps this country afloat.
