Police are calling for drivers to take extra care after a devastating day on New Zealand’s roads claimed four lives in two separate crashes.

The fatal incidents, both involving head-on collisions, occurred within hours of each other, highlighting the dangers of driving and the importance of road safety.

The first crash occurred around 8:50 a.m. in Marton, killing two drivers.

Shortly after, a second collision between a car and a truck south of Waiouru resulted in two more deaths, with a young passenger critically injured.

Whanganui Area Commander Inspector Neil Forlong described the scenes as “horrific,” noting the significant damage to the vehicles and the challenges faced by emergency responders. He praised the members of the public who were first on the scene and offered help.

Police are investigating the causes of both accidents, urging all drivers, especially ahead of Labour Weekend, to drive cautiously and remain aware of the shared responsibility on the roads.
