Hospitals across New Zealand faced record emergency department (ED) demand during a two-week peak this winter, with some treating twice as many patients as they had beds for.
According to state-funded media, Wellington Hospital’s ED reached 223 percent capacity on one day, frequently operating over 150 percent, while Waikato and Dunedin also regularly exceeded safe limits.
Middlemore and Counties Manukau experienced severe “bed block,” with more than half their ED beds occupied by patients awaiting ward admission.
Data from 28 July to 10 August showed few instances of EDs running below 100 percent capacity, except Auckland, which counted chairs and clinic rooms as treatment spaces.
Government figures indicated some improvements in reducing long ED stays, though most hospitals remained well below the 95 percent target. New ED facilities are planned for Wellington and Palmerston North.

I’ve watched people get booster after booster, almost evertime, contracting covid there after.
More shots they get, they get sicker and sicker, some have passed away.
