The Cancer Control Agency (CCA) has released ‘The State of Cancer in New Zealand 2025’, providing the most up-to-date overview of how the country is tracking across prevention, detection and treatment.
The report, published on Thursday, shows New Zealand has made “encouraging progress” over the past five years, with rising survival rates, declining smoking across all ethnicities, and more effective national screening programmes.
Chief executive Rami Rahal said the findings reflect important gains but warned the system faces mounting pressure. The number of people diagnosed with cancer each year is expected to climb from over 30,000 in 2025 to more than 45,000 by 2044.
“We cannot respond to this big increase in demand by doing more of the same. We need new and innovative ways of delivering care and preventing cancers,” he said.
The report notes that up to half of all cancers could be prevented through eliminating tobacco use, reducing alcohol consumption, improving nutrition and physical activity, and strengthening sun-protection and infection-prevention measures.
Increasing screening participation remains one of the most effective ways to improve outcomes, with early detection strongly linked to higher survival rates. CCA is now working with the sector to refresh the New Zealand Cancer Action Plan for 2019–2029, with an updated version expected in February.
‘Increasing participation in screening is a proven way to not only finding cancers early, but in some cases, preventing cancer from starting. The earlier a person’s cancer is detected and treated, the better the outcomes for them,’ said Rahal.
‘To support continued progress, we are working with the sector to refresh the actions in the New Zealand Cancer Action Plan 2019–2029, ensuring it reflects the latest evidence and prepares the system to manage the rising number of cancer cases while maintaining the highest quality of care.’

Yes there are plenty of places to get away from New Zealand, however if like me you rely on NZ Super there are some things to take into consideration. When I retired and moved to Thailand 10 years ago the exchange rate was 25 Thai baht for one NZ dollar. Today the exchange rate is 18.4 Thai baht for one dollar. Thankfully I didn’t have to go through the Ardern, Hipkins , Robinson crazed response to Covid but that exchange rate shows just how badly they screwed the economy.
