Sir Murray Halberg has died, aged 89.
Halberg won the gold medal in the 5,000m track race at the 1960 Olympics in Rome.
No-one ever exemplified the Olympic spirit of triumphing over adversity better than Sir Murray Halberg.
Rest in Peace Sir Murray 🖤

He founded the Halberg Trust which supports children with disabilities in sport. The Halberg Awards, New Zealand’s pre-eminent awards for sporting excellence were named after him.
A legend in every sense of the word. It was Murray who inspired me to put on my shorts and shoes and get out there. He will be missed, especially for his work with the Trust and the way he treated, supported and encouraged young and old alike. Enjoy your rest, mate you deserve it…
