Warnings have been issued after a surge in serious harm linked to synthetic cannabinoids in the Auckland region, with multiple people hospitalised over the past 24 hours.

Drug early warning and notification service High Alert said the sharp increase in hospital admissions is particularly concerning and appears to reflect a broader rise in synthetic cannabinoid-related harm nationwide over recent months.

Synthetic cannabinoids, often referred to as “synnies,” are a group of lab-made chemicals that can vary widely in strength and effects, making them unpredictable and dangerous.

It is not yet known which specific substance is responsible for the recent cases. Further testing is underway by PHF Science, formerly known as ESR, and updates will be provided once results are confirmed.

High Alert has urged extreme caution, especially in Auckland, warning the affected batch is likely circulating widely and may also be present in other parts of New Zealand. Anyone who becomes unconscious or stops breathing after using synthetic cannabinoids is advised to call 111 immediately.

I would like to add that 111 should be called (by someone else) if you become unconscious or stop breathing even if you didn’t take synthetic cannabinoids
