‘Terrible idea’: Willis slams Labour’s Capital Gains Tax policy

Capital Gains Tax news

Finance Minister Nicola Willis has criticised Labour’s proposal for a capital gains tax on investment property as “a massive tax on the New Zealand economy at a time when it could least afford it.”

The policy, which would exclude family homes and farms, is intended to fund three free GP visits for all New Zealanders from July 2027.

Willis said Labour’s claims that the tax would be narrow were misleading, arguing it would hit commercial property owners, KiwiSaver investors, and anyone who had saved for a rental property. She warned the policy would put businesses and the broader economy at risk.

Willis also questioned Labour’s plan to expand free doctor visits, saying it failed to address New Zealand’s shortage of GPs. She said the coalition government was focused instead on training more doctors, attracting overseas professionals, and targeting subsidies for low-income families.

ACT leader David Seymour echoed her criticism, calling the tax “divisive” and unnecessary given New Zealand’s already high tax revenue. He said Labour’s proposal reflected a recurring tendency to “punish” certain groups rather than solve systemic issues.

  1. My prediction is we are going to see what’s happened in Australia last election, in reverse. A weak, unpopular, allegedly conservative government will limp back into office, as a result of an even weaker and thoroughly out of touch Labour led coalition, that hasn’t listened to the concerns of middle class voters, who make up the bulk of the voting base.

Lets just hope people migrate away from National and Labour, to secondary parties, watering down their negative, globalist agenda ridden impact.

I hope too, in time, we have a party like Reform UK come about, that can usher them both into history’s waste bin.
