Trial of alleged jail cell rapist Benjamin Gounder begins

Benjamin Gounder news

Convicted rapist Benjamin Gounder is on trial this week in the Wellington High Court for a raft of charges alleged to have been committed against his Rimutaka Prison cell mate.

Gounder is accused of raping the 18 year old on mutliple occasions, and forcing him to perform oral sex every night, between October 2017 and January 2018.

He also is charged with threatening to kill the complainant if he told anyone.

Gounder denies the charges.

The alleged offending came to light as the result of an anonymous Crimestoppers tip-off.

A video taped interview of the complainant with police was played for the jury. The complainant described how the offending quickly escalated after the third night he moved into Gounder’s cell to sexual offending, and eventually to rape. He said he complied with the demands as he was scared for his life, especially after Gounder pulled a shank on him.

Gounder was convicted in 2013 of the abduction and rape of a homeless teenager in Hamilton.

The trial continues.
