Former US President Donald Trump has expressed confidence in his ability to resolve the Ukraine conflict, citing his “good relationship” with both Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Following a meeting with Zelensky at Trump Tower in New York, Trump stated that while he “learned a lot” from the discussion, his view remains unchanged: the conflict must be resolved with a “fair deal.”
The meeting took place after Zelensky faced criticism from Republicans for appearing to side with Trump’s political opponent, Vice President Kamala Harris, earlier in the week.
During a rally in North Carolina, Trump accused Zelensky of making “nasty aspersions” toward him and called him “a man who refuses to make a deal.”
Speaking to reporters before the meeting, Trump reiterated his belief that he could resolve the Ukraine conflict “very quickly” if he wins the upcoming presidential election in November.
“I think we both want to see this end, and we both want to see a fair deal made,” Trump said after the meeting, standing beside Zelensky. However, when asked about his specific plan, he replied, “It’s too early to say that,” adding that both he and Zelensky have their own ideas on how to achieve peace.
Trump has frequently claimed that the conflict would not have occurred if he had been president in 2022 and has promised that he could bring about a diplomatic solution “within 24 hours” of taking office. In contrast, Zelensky has maintained that the conflict must end swiftly but has ruled out peace talks with Russia, opting instead to pursue military victory.
Earlier this week, Zelensky presented US President Joe Biden with a ‘victory plan’ aimed at defeating Russia militarily. The plan, which has not been fully disclosed, reportedly includes continuing Ukraine’s military efforts, securing NATO-style security guarantees, receiving advanced weapons from the West, and international financial support for reconstruction.
Unlike Trump, the Biden administration has refrained from discussing diplomatic solutions.
After meeting with Zelensky at the White House, Biden announced over $8 billion in military aid to Ukraine, and Vice President Harris dismissed any idea of territorial concessions for peace as “dangerous and unacceptable.”
Trump’s running mate, J.D. Vance, has hinted that Trump’s peace strategy might involve freezing the conflict along current battle lines and assuring Russia that Ukraine will not join NATO. This approach aligns with one of Moscow’s key objectives of maintaining Ukrainian neutrality, though Russia has insisted that any peace talks reflect the current territorial situation, including its control of Crimea and several former Ukrainian regions that are historically and ethnically Russian.
