President Donald Trump has rejected Iran’s latest offer aimed at reopening the Strait of Hormuz and reviving nuclear talks, describing Tehran’s conditions as “unacceptable” and claiming Iran is seeking an agreement because of growing economic pressure.
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi presented what he called a “concrete seven-day plan” during this week’s UN General Assembly meetings in New York. The proposal would see Iran restore normal shipping through the Strait of Hormuz and return to negotiations over its nuclear programme in exchange for the United States lifting its naval blockade, relaxing restrictions on Iranian oil exports, releasing frozen Iranian assets and observing a ceasefire that would also halt Israeli military operations in Lebanon.
Trump dismissed the offer while speaking to reporters outside the White House on Saturday.
“I reject their proposal,” he said, arguing that Iran wanted an agreement because it was “losing so badly.”
Trump said he remained willing to negotiate but maintained that the terms put forward by Tehran could not be accepted. He did not identify which particular conditions were preventing an agreement.
Araghchi acknowledged Trump’s comments but said Iran was still awaiting an official response from Washington. He has previously stated that the Strait of Hormuz could be reopened and ordinary maritime traffic restored within seven days if Tehran’s conditions were satisfied.
Trump, meanwhile, argued that Iran had damaged its own position by restricting shipping through the strategically important waterway. He claimed the subsequent US blockade had severely reduced Tehran’s ability to generate revenue from oil exports and insisted Washington now held the stronger negotiating position.
The confrontation has also been accompanied by increasingly severe rhetoric. Addressing the UN General Assembly on Tuesday, Trump said he faced a “big decision” over whether to “annihilate” Iran should negotiations fail.
Despite Trump’s public rejection of Tehran’s proposal, diplomatic efforts have apparently not ended. US officials have indicated that discussions involving regional intermediaries are continuing, leaving open the possibility of further negotiations even as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high.

I think Iran knows this wont work but must be seen to be doing the right thing so the rest of the world applies pressure to the aggressors and not to them.
