New Zealand has recorded the highest child suicide rate among 36 OECD and EU countries, according to UNICEF’s latest Innocenti Report Card, which ranked the country near the bottom for overall child wellbeing and last for youth mental health.
The report also highlighted severe bullying issues, with New Zealand ranking second highest in that category.
Chief Children’s Commissioner Dr Claire Achmad called the findings devastating and urged urgent investment in mental health support, suicide prevention, and anti-bullying measures.
She stressed the need for Budget 2025 to prioritise child wellbeing and reduce child poverty, warning that current data shows children’s access to housing, food, and healthcare is declining.
