Police making enquiries into the discovery of the body of an infant on Wairau Bar Road on 19 May have now determined the baby’s cause of death.
“Sadly, a post-mortem examination has found that the baby was stillborn”, said Inspector Simon Feltham.
“Police are still urgently appealing for the family of the infant to come forward, as we are concerned for the welfare of the mother. We would like to ensure she is safe and can receive any appropriate treatment or support.
“We would also like to discuss options with them around the baby’s remains.
“If this is you, or you’ve got any information that might help us locate the mother or other family, please get in touch through our 105 service, either over the phone or online at 105.police.govt.nz.”
